The trend of clinical applications of stem cells

Abstract

|
Many people thought stem cells are used for various of kinds of diseases prior to Dr. Hwang’s Scandal. However, clinical application of stem cells for patients is not easy as people would think, because the knowledge and information of stem cells are not well known still.
There are about 200 clinical applied cases from 2004. There have been many problems of clinical applications of stem cells in Korea. The applied stem cells are almost adult stem cells that delivered from cord blood or patient body himself.
The clinical practices of stem cells have been conducted under the name of ‘Emergency Clinical Trials’ without proper clinical trial results or evidence based positive clinical results. Many patients paid a huge amount of money for practices that were not proved and it became a social issue. The KFDA were involved and changed the guideline in order to solve the problems of emergency clinical trials.
There are many kinds of stem cell clinical trials in the world and most of them are adult stem cell cases. Currently a limited number of countries have special guidelines for stem cell clinical trials and most of other countries do not have them. This related to why the information and knowledge of stem cells are still not well known. We have to be careful with clinical use of stem cells even adult stem cells. We have to strictly follow the general guideline of clinical trials and make further specified guidelines to prevent complications and problems using stem cells for clinical applications.
